Ennekerdijk 13 Borne
Joseph Hes, his wife Jette Honij and their three children Sally (1908), Bertha (1910) and Clara (1919), come to Onstwedde in 1926 from Borne. Joseph becomes a Jewish pastor and religious teacher, but he also sits on the board of the Borne Public School. Every week he goes to slaughter ritual at the butcher shop of Isaac Lievendag, the only kosher butcher shop in Borne. He also teaches religion in Delden and is a ritual slaughterer. After Hitler's seizure of power in Germany, Pastor Hes committed to German-Jewish refugees. At some point the Jews are not allowed to go outside after eight o'clock in the evening, but no one is allowed to visit them either. Nevertheless, a neighbor, resident of the Bussemakershuis and herself of German descent, came back every night to see if everything was fine. Bertha, the eldest daughter of Joseph and Jette, left for Apeldoorn in 1928 at the age of 18, she married and died in Sobibor with her husband during the war. Son Sally leaves in March 1938 for Harlingen and becomes a religious teacher. He marries Anna Rosa van Gelder from Borne and they have a daughter: Mathilde. All three are deported to Auschwitz, where Anna and their daughter are killed immediately upon arrival. Sally lives until shortly before the liberation, but eventually succumbs to an untreated infectious disease in Auschwitz. Only the youngest daughter Clara still lives at home when the war starts. She goes into hiding and survives through various hiding addresses. Among other things, she is in hiding with a family in Vught, who turn out to be gestapo spies and can barely escape. During a raid at another address, she also manages to get away just in time. At another time, she sits in a hole under the floor during a raid: planks and then a carpet are placed over it and another sofa is put on it. It must have been very tense times, literally and figuratively. The Hes couple are also offered various hiding addresses, but hope for God's protection. They must move to a Jewish ghetto in Amsterdam in April 1943, are then transferred to Westerbork and deported to Sobibor in early June of the same year, where the gas chamber awaits them.
