Hoge Hondstraat 56 Deventer
Benno Maurits Jakobs was born in Emmen on May 3, 1934. He has an older brother Ino from 1931 and after a year and a half he has another brother Robert. Benno is just two when the Jakobs family moves to Deventer in May 1936. They are going to live at 20 Emmaplein. Benno's father is a trader in manufactures (buttons, tape, zippers, yarn, all sorts of things you need besides fabric to make clothes). In 1942, the family moved from Emmaplein to Hoge Hondstraat 56. After the war, they returned to the same street, but at number 53. In 1947, they moved to Amsterdam. But Benno no longer experiences life after the war. Like the rest of the family, Benno went into hiding in 1942. The family members reside at different addresses. Benno ends up with the sister of the caretaker of the synagogue. That sister, Wietske de Vries, is married to Jo Stein, but has no children. Wietske and Jo live at Parallelweg 19, near the railway. Benno is arrested on October 5, 1943. Has he been seen by a neighbor trying to catch the rabbit that has escaped? Many NSB members live nearby. One of them probably reported Benno. Benno and Wietske are arrested. Wietske returns, but Benno is sent to Westerbork. He will stay there for six weeks. Then he is transported to Auschwitz. There he was murdered on November 19, 1943.
