Noordenbergstraat 39 Deventer
This is where Alexander (Alex) de Leeuw lived with his wife Josephine Hein and her sister Adelheid Hein. Alex de Leeuw's wife, Josephine Hein, was born in Cochem Germany in 1875. She married Alex in Cochem in 1905. The marriage remained childless. Alex de Leeuw was the son of Benjamin Hartog de Leeuw (1841 Deventer-1914 Deventer) and Cato Gelder (1840 Deventer-1922 Deventer). Benjamin Hartog was a furniture maker and later an appraiser. His son Alex started a butcher shop in the Advert Dev Dagblad 1924Papenstraat and later moved his business to the Noordenbergstraat. He started his beef, veal and sheep butchery at this address from 1920. On the right of the photo an advertisement in the Deventer Dagblad from 1924. He had a slaughterhouse next to his shop. The butchers in town came there to buy when they were short; he was also a bit grosser in that regard. Alex slaughtered calves, cows, sheep, goats and lambs. There is a rumor that once a goat hung in the window with a sheep's tail sewn to it. That way he could earn more. There was also once a resident with a large Great Dane, who was often waiting for a bone at the butcher's shop. Once Alex the Lion got angry and threw a two-pound copper weight at the dog instead of a bone, but the big dog suddenly swallowed that weight. Alex ran frantically to the dog's owner in regret. Alex de Leeuw was orthodox Jewish and his butcher shop was therefore under Rabbinical Supervision, kosher, and therefore closed on Saturdays and open on Sundays. In 1941 there was temporarily no kosher meat available in Deventer. Then Alex de Leeuw temporarily bought flesh from Ph. de Liver, wholesaler in meat, in Nijkerk. Alex was a donor of the Joodsche Deventer Youth Association Tikwas Jisroeil. Josephine's brother, Siegmund Hein (1871 Cochem-1943 Auschwitz), came to live and work with them from Germany in 1922. After his marriage in 1925, Siegmund went to live in the Leusensteeg where their daughter Resie was born in 1926. Resie loved her Uncle Alex and Aunt Josephine, and she loved her. Josephine's sister, Adelheid Hein, born in 1860 in Cochem, came to live as a refugee from Germany in 1934 with her sister Josephine and her brother-in-law Alex. At the end of 1941, the butcher's shop Fa. A. de Leeuw liquidated by the occupiers. Alex, Josephine and her sister Adelheid arrived in Westerbork on 15-1-1943 and went to Auschwitz on 29-1-1943 where they were gassed on arrival three days later. A stumbling block has been placed for Adelheid in Cochem. The family of Josephine's brother, Siegmund Hein, was also murdered in the war.
