Burgemeester Boreelstraat 6 Haarlem
Philippus Lazarus de Vries, born in Veendam as the son of furniture maker Lazarus de Vries and Johanna Kamerling, married Esther Boekbinder in 1894 and later Mietje 'Marie' Beffie in 1910. The family first lived in Haarlem and later in Amsterdam. Philippus, a traveling salesman, later became a mirror and frame merchant. He had four children: Lazarus, Johanna, Elisabettha and Siegfried Leonard. Of his children, only Johanna survived the war. Philippus was established in 1923 at Schoterweg 7 as a merchant in wall decorations and from around 1930 had a mirror and frame factory at Parklaan 49. His sons Lazarus and Siegfried probably worked with him. After the death of his wife and the marriages of his children, he lived alone with his daughter Elisabettha in Haarlem at the outbreak of the war. In 1943 they moved to Amsterdam on the orders of the German authorities and were later deported to Westerbork and Sobibor, where they were murdered upon arrival. Elisabettha, actively involved in the Jewish community in Haarlem, moved to Amsterdam with her father and was deported and murdered together with him in Sobibor. Johanna, the only survivor, was possibly not placed on the German transport list because of her mixed marriage with Antonius Aarts. She inherited the family house in Boreelstraat and sold it in 1961. Lazarus and Siegfried Leonard, both sons of Philip, were also murdered in the Holocaust. Johanna, who ran the café De Doorzetter in Haarlem, lived in Amsterdam due to a 1943 ordinance, but survived the war thanks to her marriage.
