Vredenrijkstraat 11 Haarlem
Bird Dondorp-Peper, born as one of eleven children of Hijman Saul Peper and Geertje Pruijm, married Peres "Pieter" Dondorp, a merchant in fruit and vegetables. They had three children: Margaretha, George, and Eliazar. Eliazar emigrated to South Africa in 1937. Margaretha and George, together with George's wife Elisabeth Dingsdag and resident nurse Jozefina Komet, committed suicide on 16 May 1940 through gas reinforcement, just after the German capitulation. Peres Dondorp drowned in the Spaarne on December 30, 1940, probably due to the embezzlement. After the death of her husband, Vogeltje moved to Velserstraat 33 in April 1941 and stayed for some time in the nursing institution De Jewish Invalide in Amsterdam. On April 14, 1943, she was registered as in hiding. Vogeltje died in hiding on January 18, 1945, and her death was reported in Ermelo, where her hometown was registered as Amsterdam to disguise her place of residence. Birds Brother Levie "Louis" Pepper, municipal councilor for the Communist Party in Haarlem, was murdered in Neuengamme in 1942. Two other brothers, Samuel and Sara, also died in the war. Her sister Maria Paardebek pepper survived the war, just like her cousin Max Paardebek, who was hiding in Oldebroek.
