Grietje de Leeuw, born on May 18, 1918 in Enschede, comes from a prosperous family of butchers. On December 1, 1938, she herself also married a butcher, Samuel or, popularly, Sammie van Gelder. Via an advertisement in the newspaper they announce that their marriage ceremony will take place on December 4, 1938 in the synagogue of Enschede, followed by a reception. Their address will be Brugstraat 27 in Hengelo. On April 4, 1939 their daughter is born, they call her Eva.

Shortly after the occupation of the Netherlands, more and more anti-Jewish measures were taken by the Germans with the intention of expelling the Jewish population from the Netherlands and eventually killing it. Jewish men, for example, have to report to a labor camp, a form of forced labor: heavy work, malnutrition, violence, no freedom. According to information from the Red Cross, Samuel van Gelder was in such a labor camp near Kesteren, a village in the Betuwe. In the night of 2 to 3 October 1942 the labor camps are evacuated and the men taken to camp Westerbork under the pretext that they will be reunited there with their families. At the same time, on Friday, October 2, 1942, 40 Jewish residents of Hengelo were taken from their homes, according to the police report, between 08:00 and 12:00 and transferred to the police station on the corner of the Marskant. Grietje van Gelder-de Leeuw and her daughter Eva are also there, as well as her in-laws Alex van Gelder, his wife and two daughters. The next day, Saturday 3 October, they are transported by the Sicherheitspolitie to the transit camp Westerbork. There is no question of family reunification. Men and women with children are kept separate in separate barracks. On November 6, 1942, Grietje van Gelder and her daughter Eva are deported from Westerbork to the Auschwitz concentration camp and are murdered there. Grietje van Gelder ~ de Leeuw is then 24 years old and Eva 3 years old. On the personal card it says next to her name: 23 Dec '42 V.O.W. Left Unknown Where To. Her three brothers and a sister of Grietje de Leeuw do not survive either.
