Beekstraat 22a Meerssen
Henri Schepers is a tailor and lived with his employer, tailor Albert Joris (Sen). He is the son of cigar maker Nicolaas Schepers from Elsloo, who is married to Maria Margaretha Cremers, also from Elsloo. Henri comes from a family with ten children. When the war starts, he is 25 years old and unmarried. He is the keeper of the first team of football club Marsana in Meerssen. In 1943, Schepers is forced to employ in Aachen. From there he flees to Belgium and immediately goes into the resistance: the white brigades. He works for resistance groups in Liège and Tongeren and is known as Harrie and/or De Wit. Also about Henri, the Struikelstenen working group would like to know more. How good was he as a keeper? Was he a good tailor, was it a cheerful guy? Did he go out in the village, which cafés did he visit? Was he religious? And also interesting, especially in the light of how he comes to his end: did he know Johannes van Hees van de Kruisstraat? That was practical around him. And Meerssen was small at the time. Schepers must pay for his work in the resistance with death. On August 18, 1944, he is in the fall that the Sicherheitspolizei has set up for him in the Paviljoen, a café in Meerssen (where we would like to know!). Life course Henri Schepers He was betrayed by Gonnie Zeguers-Boere, lady of pleasure in Maastricht and also a smuggler who believed to be able to safely make her nation with the betrayal. She enjoyed protecting one of her sweethearts, Richard Nitsch from the Sicherheitspolizei and she wanted to keep it that way. In the Limburgs Dagblad of November 16, 1948 there is an article with the following content: 'Richard Nitsch account asked about many cowardly murder - deadly shots in Paviljoen in Meerssen -. The murder in the pavilion in Meerssen are heard as witnesses Peter Huls, driver in Eygelshoven and the castle Dhr. J.L.M. Franssen from Meerssen. Mrs. Franssen, the third witness, could not be present. On the day in question were in the Café H.H. Schepers, witness Huls and wife Zeguers-Boere, secretly employed by the S.D. A written explanation is read from the latter. The S.D. The café penetrated, and just after the 'Hands Up' command, Schepers was shot by Nitsch. Schepers turned out to be in possession of a revolver and would not have put their hands up in time. About the issue, whether Nitsch immediately shot, or gave Schepers a grace shot after a certain break, Nitsch contradicts the witness Franssen. It is remarkable that Zeguers-Boere witnessed Huls had requested something else to sit down, so that, after it turned out, it was not in the fire line between the door and Schepers. The death penalty was demanded against Gonnie Zeguers-Boere in 1947, but after the war she was sentenced to 14 years in prison and T.B.R. Henri Hubertus Schepers is buried in the Netherlands Honor Field in Loenen (box A, Graf 563).
