Rotterdamschedijk 268b II
Schiedam
Abraham Bobbe is the middle child of five, with two older sisters (Mietje and Truitje) and two younger brothers (Izak and Hartog). Their father is called Eliazar Bobbe, the mother is Theresia Bobbe-Barendse. At the end of 1942 only Isaac of this family is still alive; he died on April 20, 1945 in Dachau near Munich; that is nine days before the liberation of the camp by American troops.
In early 1936 Abraham opened a business in silk and woolen fabrics at 225 Rotterdamschedijk.
Two days before he is arrested, he sends his wife and son away to go into hiding on the islands. He knows he is betrayed; according to his character, Abraham offered someone help, but that person will betray him, he suspects - or even he knows, according to the account. He is right: he is picked up at home and taken to the Scheveningen prison, the “Oranjehotel”. There he was arrested on December 3, 1941 and eventually deported, after which he arrived in Buchenwald on February 24, 1942.
Buchenwald is not the final destination for Abraham Bobbe; on May 29, 1942 he is taken to Mauthausen. This is a concentration camp in Austria with an infamous 186 Staircase of Death along which granite has to be lugged up from the quarry near the camp. After three weeks, on June 20, 1942, Abraham Bobbe dies, 18 days after his 38th birthday. In August his sisters Mietje and Truitje, in September his youngest brother, Hartog, and in October of the same year his parents, all in Auschwitz.
