Gasthuisstraat 12 Steenwijk
Buildings 10-12 and 14-16 on Gasthuisstraat were merged after the war and used by florist Gaal. Buildings 14-16 consisted of two houses. It has long been the property of the Dutch Israelite Municipality of Steenwijk. Between 1900 and 1930, the Jewish rabbis, the predecessors, lived in the synagogue on Gasthuisstraat on the ground floor (now no.14, in war no.12). In 1939 Hijman Pines Vrieslander, born in Amsterdam, was appointed in Steenwijk. Vrieslander settled at this address together with his wife Carolina Cohen, who was born in Oldenzaal. In addition to leading the services, he taught religion and arranged for slaughtering according to the rituals so that the meat was kosher. Hijman Vrieslander was the representative of the Jewish Council for Steenwijk. The Council office was also located here. From May 1942, tailoring courses were also given here for unemployed Jewish men who had been fired from public service or from whom the company had been requisitioned by the Germans. The courses lasted until July 1942 when the Jewish men had to go to labor camps. Heiman and Carolina had two children, both of whom were born in the war: Mirjam Shelomieth and Daniel Immanoeël. Hijman Vrieslander was removed from his home in August 1942. He had to go to the labor camp in Ruinen. The next day he was sent to Westerbork. Shortly later he was reunited there with his wife and children. On May 18, 1943, they were deported to Sobibor, where they were killed three days later. Hijman was 30 at the time, Carolina 29, Mirjam 3 and Daniel 2 years.
