Tuinstraat 50 Tilburg
Selma Neumann was born on December 13, 1890 in Filehne (Poland), the daughter of Siegmund Neumann and Paulina Cohn. She married Max Markus, manufacturer of sound carriers, on April 10, 1924 in Filehne. Her husband had a daughter from a previous marriage, Gisela. The marriage of Max and Selma Marcus remained childless. Max Marcus, Selma Neumann's husband, had a company in Berlin under the name 'Tempophon' that produced sound carriers. When the situation for the Jews in Germany became increasingly grim after the seizure of power in 1933, Max Marcus decided to flee to the Netherlands. On November 13, 1934, he was registered in Oisterwijk where he restarted his business. Already on April 27, 1935, he moved to the J.P. Coenstraat 1d in Tilburg and a few days later his wife and daughter also came from Berlin to Tilburg. The company of Max Marcus, 'Tempofoon', was also moved from Oisterwijk to a space at Julianapark 44 in Tilburg. In March 1940 Max Marcus moved with his wife to Rijswijk, but already on October 4, 1940 they returned to Tilburg because the entire coastal region from Schiermonnikoog to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen became a forbidden area for non-Dutch refugees (mainly Jews who had fled Germany). Initially they lived at 26 Philips Vingboonsstraat and from 15 May 1941 at 50 Tuinstraat. When Selma Neumann and her husband received a summons on 28 August 1942 to report for 'job expansion' in Germany, they went into hiding with N.H.C. van Dijk at Goirkepark 43,[1] next to the business premises of 'Tempofoon'. Their daughter and son-in-law were also hiding there. After a tip about possible 'black trade', the police raided Van Dijk on 19 February 1943. There the couple Marcus is found in a cupboard.[2] Selma manages to ingest poison unnoticed. When the first symptoms manifested, her stomach was with the G.G. and G.D. rinsed clean and then she was admitted to the Sint Liduina Hospital (auxiliary hospital) on the Pelgrimsweg. On 21 February 1943 Selma Neumann and Max Marcus were registered in the Polizei- und Untersuchungs Gefängnis Haaren under numbers 1735 and 1736. On 29 March 1943 they were transferred to Westerbork (barrack 60). On April 6, 1943 they were deported to Sobibor where they were killed on arrival on April 9, 1943.
