Sassenstraat 5 A Zwolle
With this stumbling stone we commemorate Klara van Gelderen. She died in Auschwitz on December 3, 1942, aged 60. Klara was unmarried. ** Klara van Gelderen was born on March 21, 1882 in Zwolle as the first child of Abraham van Gelderen (1849-1929) and Judith Snitslaar (1853-1934). Her father was a cattle merchant. After Klara, nine more children followed until 1896: six girls, two boys and an inanimate child. A brother and a sister died young. The family lived at various addresses in Zwolle, including in Nieuwstraat, Bitterstraat, Achter de Broeren and eventually Diezerstraat. Klara, her brother and sisters went out into the world as soon as they were old enough. They settled in Amsterdam, but also in Antwerp and Lisbon. Klara herself lived in Lemsterland and Beilen for a short time. Her profession was coupeuse (dressmaker). In the end, only she and her brother Isidoor stayed in Zwolle. After Klara's parents passed away, she was on her own. After the upstairs apartment in Diezerstraat (above Corsettenmagazijn Royal) she lived successively in Voorstraat and Thorbeckegracht. Eventually, shortly before 1940, she would move into a house above a shop at Sassenstraat 5a. On November 19, 1942, Klara was deported to Westerbork together with a large group of other Jewish people from Zwolle. That was the second major deportation from Zwolle, which took place from November 18 to 20. Eleven days later, on November 30, Klara's last journey, transport 39, followed to Auschwitz. This transport counted 826 people. Assuming a three-day trip, she probably arrived on December 2, 1942. Given her age, it is believed that she was gassed immediately upon arrival. Her death certificate drawn up after the war mentions the date of December 3. Klara's parents, her brother and several sisters died before the war. Most of her brother and sisters' families died in the Holocaust. The fate of two sisters and a brother-in-law is unknown. No photos have been found of Klara van Gelderen. We know little about her life. She is no exception. Many other Jewish people from Zwolle who died in the concentration camps have also been wiped off the earth without leaving any photos or many other traces of them. http://www.judaica-zwolle.nl/article.php?articleID=178
