Zwolle
With this stumbling block we commemorate Meijer Nord, born in Zwolle on January 8, 1905. He was 40 years old when he died on January 26, 1945 in Auschwitz or surroundings. Meijer was unmarried. **
Meijer Nord was born on the Bitterstraat in Zwolle as the second son of father Joseph Nord (Zwolle 1876-Amsterdam 1944) and mother Betje Koopman (Zwolle 1884-Amsterdam 1958)
After completing the Municipal Trade School in Zwolle, Meijer left for Brussels to obtain a "Diplome international" as "Proffesseur de Danse et de Maintien". On August 24, 1925, the Provincial Overijssel and Zwolsche Courant reports that Meijer Nord, then only 20 years old, starts a dance institute in Zwolle. He gives his lessons in theater Odeon at the Blijmarkt. A year later, on November 20, 1926, he opened his own dance institute at Melkmarkt 30. From November 1928 he also offered lessons in "rhythmic gymnastics". In November 1933, the dance institute moves (after several intermediate addresses) to a new hall at 44 Jufferenwal.
On October 5, 1934, a drama takes place at the door of dance institute Nord. A group of boys has been causing nuisance for some time and also causes the necessary noise on October 5. When Meijer and some of his students come out to scare the boys, things go wrong. Meijer is stabbed by 17-year-old Arie Groothand with a knife in his left chest and collapses on the spot. The young make sure they get away, while Meijer is brought to the Sophia hospital asap. Only about 3 weeks later he is released from the hospital. Obviously, he still needed some time to recover, and it was not until December that he slowly resumed his work. At that time, they mainly consist of conducting party and dance evenings.
From January 1935, Meijer slowly started to give (private) lessons again. From September, advertisements for general classes will start to appear in the Zwolse Courant again. He no longer gave these lessons at the Jufferenwal, but again in Odeon. On September 11, 1937, Meijer left Zwolle and left for Amsterdam with his parents. However, they did not stay long, because on October 19 they lived together in Zwolle again; first at Eekwal 71, later at Thorbeckegracht 50. Here, Meijer opened a shop for jewelery and (luminous) advertising objects.
On August 7, 1941 an announcement appeared in the Zwolse Courant for the sale of the ground floor and upstairs apartment at Thorbeckegracht 50. Meijer was only registered at 34 Zoomstraat 34 I in Amsterdam in July 1942. Where he lived in the meantime is unknown, as is exactly what happened to him in Amsterdam.
As the war progressed, anti-Jewish measures were intensified and more and more Jews were arrested and taken away. Meijer tried to flee this by going into hiding. Unfortunately he was arrested somewhere around August 1944 and taken to camp Westerbork. He arrived here on August 21, 1944. On September 3, 1944, Meijer is deported to Auschwitz concentration camp. A very poignant fact is that this was also the very last transport that made the journey from Westerbork to Auschwitz. About 3 to 4 days later, Meijer will have arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Upon arrival, he survived the selection on the platform and was placed as a forced laborer in the labor camp. Here he undoubtedly had a horrible time until his death on January 26, 1945: one day before the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp.
