During the early years of the war, Jona Elburg and Marianne van Dam had a son named Barend. In fall 1942, a raid led to over 600 Jews being captured, including Marianne and Barend, who were taken to Westerbork transit camp. Jona managed to hide. Marianne eventually escaped Westerbork by bribing a truck driver to hide her in his vehicle. She intended to take Barend with her, but the driver refused, fearing the child's noise would betray them. Barend stayed with an acquaintance in the camp, thought safe due to a Palestine certificate, which turned out worthless. After Marianne's escape was discovered, Barend's caretaker was sent to Sobibor and killed. Barend remained in Westerbork until 1944, when he was deported to Auschwitz and murdered. His parents survived the war.
