Beekstraat 2 Hengelo
Clara and Rosetta Cohen lived at 6 Beekstraat (first door on the right), next to the place where the discotheques “de Walvis” and “New-York” used to be. Clara and Rosetta were both born in Hengelo. Clara on July 15, 1881 and Rosetta on March 4, 1886. Clara, known as Cato, and Rosetta, called Setta, were sisters. They sold candy, vegetables, fruit and fish in a small shop on the Beekstraat. They were often teased and sometimes bullied when they took their cart on the street. Rosetta and Clara were sisters of Simon Cohen (Elzenstraat 3, Hengelo) and Nathan Izak Cohen who lived in Enschede at 92 Lindestraat. On April 10, 1943, Clara and Rosetta had to report to the police, along with many others, after which they were taken to camp Vught. A few weeks later they were transported to Sobibor concentration camp in Poland. There they were immediately killed in the gas chamber upon arrival on May 14, 1943. Clara was 61 years old at the time, Rosetta was 57 years old.
