Old cityhall
Gust Goemans was born in Bierbeek in 1894, lived in Hamme-Mille and had been municipal secretary of Bierbeek since 1926. As a veteran of the First World War, he became involved in the resistance within the Lambert group, part of the National Royalist Movement (NKB).
He was particularly committed to providing clandestine assistance to conscientious objectors and their families. He was arrested on 6 October 1943 in the town hall and, via Breendonk, ended up in the Buchenwald camp and later in Dora-Mittelbau. He died on an unknown date in April 1945, probably as a result of deprivation during the infamous “death marches”. .
