Graaf Florisweg 98 Gouda
Basia Austeiczer-Udler (70) lived here for a year and a half with her daughter Bert (h) a. Basia (Basje) was born on September 15, 1872 in Kosmin. She married hotelier Max Austeicer. The couple had two children in Starokonstantinov: Schifra in July 1896 and Berta in July 1898. The family emigrated to the Netherlands in 1910 and went to live in Rotterdam. Husband Max died on May 4, 1932. Daughter Berta graduated in 1926 and became a lawyer and attorney. From July 1940 Basia lived on the Mathenesserlaan in Rotterdam. On April 7, 1941 she was forced to move to Gouda. She lived here with daughter Berta for eighteen months on the Graaf Florisweg 98. Israel and Hadassa Herschberg, the children of her daughter Schifra, lived with them for the first four months. They are listed on the 1941 Gouda Jewish Registration List. Israel was thirteen at the time, Hadassa was just six years old. Their mother, Basia's daughter Schifra, married Schaja Hersch Herschberg in 1926 and died one month after the birth of her daughter in 1935. Their father remarried at the beginning of August 1941 in Rotterdam to Betsy Blauw. His children lived with their grandmother Basia in Gouda for the four months before and one and a half months after that marriage. Hadassah attended primary school here, but public education was banned for Jewish children in September. In mid-September 1941 the children returned to Rotterdam. On November 27, 1942, Basia moved, with or without her daughter, first to the Jewish retirement home on the Oosthaven and on February 27 to Sophiastraat 53. Basia certainly did not live here for a long time, already the next month on March 25, 1943 she was detained in Westerbork. The address on her Jewish Council map is A'dam-Deurloostraat. Perhaps she also lived there for a while and was deported to Westerbork from that address. On her Jewish Council card you can see the attempts to help her through the Barneveld list and her daughter's relationships. But it was in vain. Four weeks later she was deported to Sobibor and immediately upon arrival on April 23, 1943, she was murdered. Grandchildren Israel and Hadassa arrived with their father and stepmother Betsy from Rotterdam in Amsterdam and were detained in Westerbork on April 27, 1944. All four survived their deportation to Bergen-Belsen in mid-May 1944 and their transport to Biberach in January 1945 (Jewish / prisoner exchange). Israel later became a professor. He was involved in the security of computers, the NRC once described him as a "computer hacker with a mission". Daughter Berta also survived. She was very active in Jewish organizations before and after the war and lived to be 85 years old. Now a Stolperstein in the sidewalk in front of the Graaf Florisweg 98 reminds of Basia Austeiczer-Udler.
