Bernard Citroen was born in 1865 and spent much of his life in the Netherlands, building a quiet family world with his wife Emma Meijer after their marriage in 1903. They raised a child who would later survive the war, but happiness did not last: Emma died in 1936, leaving Bernard alone in his later years.
When the Nazis occupied the country, Bernard was targeted because he was Jewish. From his home on Spruitenbosstraat in Haarlem, he was deported in 1943. Only weeks later, on 9 April, he was murdered in the Sobibor extermination camp at the age of seventy-seven.
