Sophiastraat 47 Gouda
Sylvester Herrmann, also known as Sylve, Silver or Silvain Herrmann, was born on July 16, 1880 in Greimerath near Trier, Germany, was a son of Bernhard Herrmann and Babette Kallmann. He married on January 3, 1911 in Bayenthal (Cologne), to Lina Marx, born there on February 20, 1883 as daughter of Moses Marx and Sara Wurzweiler. The couple had two daughters, i.e. Erna and Hildegard. Erna Herrmann was born on March 16, 1912 in Niederzerf (D), married Leo Hanau who was born on January 27, 1904. After their marriage they emigrated to the USA where Erna died in 1991 and Leo 2003. Erna and Leo had two children. Hildgard Herrmann was born on 21-1-1914 in Niederzerf (D) but lived with her parents in Losheim (D). At the age of 16 she came to Rotterdam where she started working as a shorthand typist. She was registered as a resident on December 8, 1930 at the address Mathenesserlaan 196 A in Rotterdam. She moved on October 7, 1932 to the 's-Gravendijkwal 75C where she lived again and on March 1, 1936 to Mauritsweg 25, also living again. On December 23, 1936, she married Marijn van Dantzig in Rotterdam, born on 8-12-1904 in Amsterdam, the son of Abraham van Dantzig and Bertha de Kadt. Abraham van Dantzig lived in Frankfurt am Main with his 2nd non-Jewish wife; Bertha de Kadt had already died in 1920. Marijn arrived when he was 19 years old on February 11, 1924 from Frankfurt am Main in Rotterdam and then lived with his uncle and aunt Abraham van Dantzig and Anna de Kadt at Claes de Vrieselaan 158B. He was trained in the hosiery trade in his uncle's factory for corporate clothing and undergarments, located on the Gedempte Binnenrotte in Rotterdam, where he then worked as a volunteer but was later, after the bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940, where the factory of his uncle was destroyed, teacher and joined the congregation. After their marriage, Hildegard Herrmann and her husband Marijn van Dantzig lived at Dordtschelaan 232C in Rotterdam. Marijn had been a teacher since September 26, 1941 and was "barred because of function" by the Jewish Council. Hildgard then worked as an employee of the care service at the Jewish Council and did pastoral work. She was also "blocked" because of the function of her husband. Both survived the Holocaust and returned to Rotterdam in September 1946 and moved back to their old home. Sylvester Herrmann and his wife Lina Marx came to the Netherlands on April 26, 1939 from their home town of Losheim near Trier, presumably to Rotterdam. It is not impossible that Sylve and Lina had to evacuate in the course of 1940 to Waddinxveen, where they ended up at 89 Bloemendaalscheweg with German-born Kurt Walter Roberg. As of January 30, 1941 they moved to Bothastraat 7 in Gouda and their last known address in Gouda was Sophiastraat 47. Lina Marx died in Gouda on June 9, 1942. She was buried there two days later, but was reburied in 1976 at the Jewish Cemetery in Wageningen. Sylvester Herrmann was admitted to the Jewish Hospital at Schietbaanlaan 42 in Rotterdam on 27 February 1942, where he probably had to stay for a few weeks. After returning to 47 Sophiastraat in Gouda, he was taken from there to Westerbork on 14 April 1943 and deported to Theresienstadt six days later on 20 April 1943. There he died on November 16, 1943.
