Rijksstraatweg 39 Haarlem
Alfred was born at Rijnstraat 212 (3-high) in Amsterdam as the youngest of four children of Antonie Daniël Hemelraad and Mina (Minnie) Wolf. Antonie came from Dordrecht and had previously worked in clothing stores in Breda and Leiden. In August 1938 the family came to live at Rijksstraatweg 39. There Antonie became the owner of the branch of Klumper's Kleedinghuis. The two eldest children, Rozet (1916) and Hijman (1919), left the house when they married shortly after each other in August and September 1939. There is a list of grades for their brother Willem (1924) from the Jewish Lyceum from 1941, where he was then in the third grade. Alfred, the youngest, followed a different route. According to the archives he was a furrier. He was probably apprenticed to his brother Hijman, who, with his also young wife Sellien Rodrigues, ran a 'pelterij' (fur workshop) at number 43 of the chic Gallery in Amsterdam. That was the shopping paradise next to the Paleis voor Volksvlijt and was located exactly where the Dutch Bank now stands. Perhaps Alfred also stayed with his brother and sister-in-law, who lived in Deurloosstraat. The suspicion that Alfred worked for them is in any case strengthened by the knowledge that Alfred was arrested at the same time as Hijman and Sellien. They were imprisoned in Vught on May 14, 1943 and were transported from there to Westerbork on May 23. Two days later their train left for Sobibor, where all three were murdered on arrival on May 28. Parents Antonie and Mina, like their other two children, survived the war. They returned from hiding to Rijksstraatweg 39 at the end of 1945 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary there in 1964. In the meantime, Willem had emigrated to Sydney with his wife Ronny Rubens and Rozet lived in Schiedam, after her husband Barend Franschman was murdered in the Holocaust. Rozet and Willem died in 1987 respectively. 1986 childless, so no direct descendants are left alive. Deportation from Westerbork on May 25, 1943. Killed in Sobibor on May 28, 1943.
