Stationsweg 14-16 Zuidlaren
This building once housed Moos (Mozes Machiel) Cohen manufactures, ready-to-wear, furniture and luxury items. Full cousin of Izaäk van Dam and at the same time his biggest competitor. That even went so far that in 1937 Moos left the Zuidlaarder Handelsvereniging - of which his nephew was chairman - and founded his own Winkeliersvereniging! Moos was born in Eext in 1888 as the son of Salomon Cohen and Hendrikje Rosenbaum. So his mother was a sister of Van Dam's mother and they were both daughters of Itzig Rosenbaum, who was the founder of the small Jewish chilly in Zuidlaren. In 1919 Moos Cohen married Sophia Meijer, born 1894 in Vlagtwedde, daughter of the cattle dealer Benjamin Meijer and Geertje Braaf. They had two children: Salomon Benjamin (born 1920 in Zuidlaren and named after both his grandfathers, he would later study veterinary science in Utrecht) and Gerda Henny (born 1925 in Zuidlaren and named after both her grandmothers). She had striking red hair and was promptly - years before Hanny Schaft - called "the girl with the red hair." She finished the MULO in Zuidlaren and trained as a hairdresser. Moos performed well and even managed to open a branch in Annen, which was run by his closest colleague Bertus Kingma. Then war broke out. Moos Cohen also tried unsuccessfully to come to England by boat in the 1940s and then endured - like so many other Jews - the humiliation caused by the anti-Jewish measures of the occupying government. His shop was taken over by a so-called "Verwalter", robbed and finally confiscated. In August 1942, Moos and Sophie were arrested with their daughter and allegedly spent another night in the cells behind the old town hall. Bertus Kingma visited them there. The other day they were taken to the Brink with both the Van Dam families, from where they allegedly drove a tow truck to the station in Tynaarlo and then ended up together in Westerbork. For example, the North was "powered". They were deported on August 28 and were killed three days later in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Sallo survived them for almost a year and died on June 11, 1943 in Sobibor. For a long time we had no picture of the Cohen family, until a few years ago a cousin of Sophie Cohen-Meijer, mrs. Liny Rosenberg-Meijer from Amstelveen, said that she still had pictures of them. From Moos and Sophie in a KLM plane at Eelde airport, and from Sallo and Gerda during a sailing trip on the Zuidlaarder Meer. Thus names were given for a face.
