Rodetorenplein 8
Zwolle
With this stumbling stone we commemorate Levie Vomberg. He was 56 when he was murdered in Auschwitz on November 27, 1942. Levie was unmarried. **
Levie Vomberg was born on September 1, 1886 in Dalfsen as the only child of cattle dealer Gerson Vomberg (1857-1923) and Esther Cracau (1853-1941). Gerson was a board member of Gemilut Chasadim, the charity association of the Jewish community in Zwolle. The couple is buried at the Jewish cemetery in Zwolle.
In October 1919 the Vombergs moved to Rodetorenplein 8 in Zwolle. After his father died in 1923, Levie lived here with his mother. On February 24, 1942, he moved to Diezerstraat 81, on September 14, 42 to Praubstraat 1. The reasons for these moves are not entirely clear. Was Levie looking for a boarding house after his mother died?
Hartog and Mietje Hes-Marcus rented the ground floor apartment at Rodetorenplein 8. They had a textile wholesaler at 45 Melkmarkt, but this property was advanced by the occupying forces at the end of 1941.
Levie was known as an honest, reliable livestock dealer and had a regular clientele among farmers in the Zwolle area. On one of his trips he lost his bicycle plate from 1938. This proof of the bicycle tax was found in 1986 on the Zuidelijke Vechtdijk between Dalfsen and Zwolle.
In addition to his livestock trade, Levie fulfilled the position of Sjoumer haKasjruet, supervisor of the correct slaughter of livestock according to the laws of Kashrut. So he enjoyed the confidence of the Zwolle rabbinate.
Jewish livestock traders also fell victim to the anti-Jewish measures of the occupying forces that continued to intensify. The ban on entering the cattle market in Zwolle was only one of the restrictive measures. Obviously this had an effect on his behavior. Levie's customers noticed that he was afraid and insecure.
On November 18, 1942, Levie along with dozens of other Jewish people from Zwolle was arrested by the Zwolle police and transferred to the transit camp Westerbork. A few days later, on November 24, deportation followed708 others to Auschwitz. Levie Vomberg was killed by gasification immediately after arrival in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
