Commandeursweg 29 Bennekom
The Frankenthal family, consisting of Ludwig, Ilse, Günther (10) and Wolfgang (8), fled from Leipzig to The Hague in 1938 to escape a pogrom in Germany. Ludwig, a surgeon, was imprisoned and the family hoped to emigrate to America, but their possessions were left in Leipzig. In 1941, after the German invasion of the Netherlands, they were forced to give up their plan to go to America and left The Hague. They settled in Bennekom, where they lived in a guest house with only two rooms. Günther and Wolfgang went to the school with the Bible in the Commanderij and learned Dutch. In April 1943 they were called to go to Camp Westerbork, where Ludwig could work as a doctor. In October 1944, after a conflict between Ludwig and De Kampleid, the family was put on transport to Auschwitz. Ludwig and Wolfgang were murdered on arrival, while Günther had to do forced labor and died in February 1945. Ilse worked in ammunition factories and was liberated on April 14, 1945. She was the only survivor and settled after the war in Brunssum, where a statue was erected for her.
