Louis Monasch and Elizabeth Cohen were a Jewish deaf couple from Groningen. Louis, born in Rotterdam in 1908, became a bookkeeper and an active advocate for the rights of the Deaf community. Elizabeth, also deaf, was the youngest daughter of Levie Cohen and Naatje van Coevorden. They married in 1935 and lived at De Sitterstraat 5 in Groningen with their two children: Leo Louis, born deaf in 1936, and Leida Betsy, born in 1940, the only hearing member of the family. In October 1942 the family was deported from Groningen to Westerbork and then to Auschwitz. Louis, Elizabeth, Leo Louis and little Leida Betsy were murdered there on 19 October 1942.
