Groenstraat 70 Sint-Niklaas
The widow of Frans De Tender lives on the homestead in Groenstraat with her two sons Raphaël (°1915) and Armand (°1918). The remote farm was, they thought, a suitable place for people in hiding. When the Geheime Feldpolizei surrounds the farm in the early morning of August 2, 1944, they find Albert Zaman, who has been staying there in secret for three months. He was forced to work in Germany, but no longer wants to work there after a leave of absence. Since then he has lived in hiding on the farm of the De Tender family. However, Armand and Raphaël are told by the Germans. This is followed by the search. Both brothers and Albert are imprisoned in Ghent prison. The then 64-year-old widow and mother is left destitute alone.
Five days later, both brothers are taken by car to the prison in the Begijnenstraat in Antwerp. It is not their final destination, but a first step towards the Deutsche Reich. On August 10, 1944, they arrive at the Buchenwald concentration camp. For three weeks the brothers will share the same fate, but at the end of August Raphaël is transferred to a labor command in Blankenburg. Armand remains in Buchenwald because of his failing health. There he was liberated by the Americans on April 11, 1945. On May 7, 1945, he is transported by plane to Evere and then taken by car to Sint-Niklaas.
