Veldweg 17 Hattem
Elisabeth Bakker was a daughter of Mozes Bakker, (born Zwolle April 26, 1868 - died Zwolle July 18, 1947), merchant) and of Mietje Velleman (born Amsterdam ca. 1865 - died Zwolle September 26, 1925). Mozes and Mietje were married on February 27, 1903 in Weesp. Two children were born from this marriage in Zwolle: Elisabeth (mentioned above) on October 10, 1905 and Abraham on January 9, 1908. Mozes Bakker had a shop in Zwolle in the Sassenstraat at no. 39. In December 1939 he moved to Hattem, Veldweg C 264-1. After the war he returned to Zwolle. From September 27, 1945 until his death on July 18, 1947, he lived at No. 2 in Derk Buismanstraat. Elisabeth Bakker married on June 7, 1932 in Zwolle to Abraham van Gelder, merchant. The couple lived at 34 Deventerstraatweg in Zwolle. The couple were killed by the resistance during their hiding. Mr. Abraham van Gelder and his wife Elisabeth van Gelder-Bakker lived at 17 Veldweg. In 1942 they went into hiding nearby in a hut on the Molencaten estate. Several other Jewish families were in hiding on the grounds. Because of the IJssel line, there were quite a few German units stationed near the hiding place. On January 4, 1944, there was a military exercise in the forest, where a tank got stuck. The people in hiding had left their accommodations as a precaution, but the clearly inhabited hut was discovered. The danger of a German investigation was averted through the mediation of the mayor of Hattem. However, the Van Gelder family was not always aware of the risks of being in hiding. After the incident with the tank, the parents of the resistance were allowed to return to the hut, but their children would be housed elsewhere. The long loneliness in the cabin, without doing anything and without the children, proved intolerable. The parents wanted their children back at all costs. The danger of betrayal by the couple - the father would know who was in the resistance - forced deep discussion. On April 22, 1944, the illegal workers most involved in it gathered. The consultations concluded that liquidation was necessary. The sentence was executed the same night. The bodies are buried in the forest. After the war, a reburial took place at the Jewish cemetery in Hattem.
