Kerkstraat 79 Midden-Groningen
The Levitus family has a well-running horse butcher shop on Kerkstraat in Muntendam. Father Hartog is known not only in Muntendam, but throughout the country as one of the better horse butchers. His sausages are especially popular. Father Hartog slaughters about 20 to 30 horses a week and sells the meat in the wider area. This makes Hartog the richest Jewish resident of Muntendam. Hartog Levitus dies on March 13, 1927. Daughter Rebekah and her sister Jetta take over the business, which now continues under the name "Erven H. Levitus". Their nephews Philip and Izak Valk, who have worked in the butcher shop for years, remain involved with the company. Things go well until the war breaks out, but then Jetta and Rebekah soon have to give up the company due to anti-Jewish measures by the German occupying forces. In the fall of 1942, Rebekah and her sister were taken out of the house by the police. The sisters end up in Westerbork together with the Valk family. From there they soon have to continue to Auschwitz, where Rebekah dies on November 23, 1942. That same day her sister Jetta, her cousins Philip and Isaac and nieces Rebekah and Roosje Valk also die in the gas chamber. Rebekah was born on November 25, 1873 in Muntendam, murdered on November 23, 1942 in Auschwitz. Jetta Levitus was born on September 30, 1881 in Muntendam, murdered on November 23 in Auschwitz
