David Cohen, born in Doetinchem in 1891, was a religious teacher. He was a son of the rabbinical supervisor Samuel Cohen and Betje Cohen. He married Perlina Hoogstraal, a daughter of Manuel Hoogstraal and Mina de Vries, on June 6, 1923 in Winschoten. The couple remained childless. After their marriage, David Cohen and his wife Perlina Hoogstraal stayed in the Groningen village of Leek, but left for Eibergen on 28 February 1924. From there they moved five years later on February 28, 1928 to Amsterdam where they lived at 89 Nieuwe Kerkstraat. On April 22, 1930 they moved again, now to Dedemsvaart (municipality of Avereest), where they settled in Wethouder Molstraat F 132f, now known as Molstraat 22, Dedemsvaart. The Cohen Hoogstraal family was a prominent Jewish couple. Mrs. Cohen always wore a hat with a voile which was the height of distinction in the pre-war years. Mister Cohen was a small, slender man with a slightly arched back. He always wore a black bowler hat. Every Friday, in the afternoon, Mrs. Aaltje Hoeve-Veldhuis went to the house of the Cohen family to extinguish the fire and lights according to Jewish custom at the start of the Sabbath. At the beginning of October each year, the Cohen family had a wooden shelter made on the west side of the garden to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. Mr. and Mrs. Cohen stayed in the booth for eight days as much as possible, at least during meals. And during the celebration of Passover, Ms. Cohen delivered a number of matzos to the non-Jewish people in her home, who were eaten with taste after being provided with butter and sugar by the local residents. The Cohen family had for a few years - from October 31, 1935 to June 1, 1939 - a guardian child, namely Salomon Klein, nickname Sally, born in Amsterdam on November 13, 1923 as the son of Abraham Klein and Reintje de Klijn. Sally Klein was a "cheeky Amsterdam guts" and had soon fought with several boys from Dedemsvaart. He called them "farmers". They formed one block against him and they were called to them by harsh order. After that he was accepted as a boyfriend by all "farmers". Nor was he an easy student for the teaching staff. He was regularly sent out to reflect on his sins in the hallway. To pass the time, he then plays with a tennis ball that he always had with him. When it bounced against a door of a room, the teacher in question intervened and confiscated the ball. On 1 June 1938, Salomon Klein left the Cohen van Dedemsvaart family to Hilversum, where he lived at Achterom 143. In 1942, however, Salomon Klein was a resident of Pedagogium Achisomog in Apeldoorn, a special section of the "Apeldoornse Bos". It was a boarding school for mentally ill and difficult to educate children. In the night of 21 to 22 January 1943, Pedagogium Achisomog was 'emptied' just like the Apeldoornse Bos. Patients and nurses were deported to Auschwitz in cattle trucks where almost everyone was killed immediately, including Salomon Klein, who was murdered on January 25, 1943 with many others in Auschwitz. David Cohen and Perlina Cohen-Hoogstraal had to leave their home in Dedemsvaart on 2 January 1941 on the orders of the occupying forces and settle in Ommen at 7 Kerkplein. On April 9, 1943, both were taken to the Vught concentration camp and deported on 25 May via Westerbork to Sobibor. On arrival there on May 28, 1943, both were murdered immediately. http://www.joodsommen.nl/menu/familie-cohen-hoogstraal.html
