Max Loewenstein was born on May 19, 1905 in Recklinghausen, Germany. He is married to Hilde Rosenberg, born on September 20, 1904 in Witten, Germany. In 1934 Max and Hilde come to Eindhoven. In the same year, on October 18, 1934, their oldest son Helmut was born. A few years later another son follows: Rolf. Max Loewenstein runs a shoe store on Demer 39 in Eindhoven. The family lives above the case. During the bombing in December 1942, the entire Demer, including the Loewenstein building, was destroyed. Max Loewenstein is in hiding for a while, but is arrested and brought to Westerbork on March 31, 1943. He was deported to Auschwitz on August 24, 1943. After the eviction of Auschwitz towards the end of the war, Max Loewenstein was murdered during a wandering of one year and nine months during the then wanderings on May 31, 1945. Helmut Loewenstein is in hiding with a mother in Maarheeze, together with his mother Hilde and his younger brother Rolf. The farmer finds it too dangerous because the brothers cry a lot and has the boys picked up by a resistance fighter. Rolf was placed with farmer Pol in Apeldoorn. However, the resistance fighter handed over eight-year-old Helmut to the Germans. She had done this before and was sentenced to 20 years in prison after the war. Helmut Loewenstein is brought to Westerbork on November 4, 1943. He was deported to Auschwitz on November 16, 1943 and murdered there on arrival on November 19, 1943. Mother Hilde and her son Rolf survived the war.
