Graaf Florisweg 15

Henni Freudenstein (55) lived at this address for over a year and a half.
She was born on December 21, 1887 in Rösebeck. Her parents Isaak and Tine and sister Frieda emigrated from Nazi Germany to Argentina in 1936. Henni emigrated to the Netherlands in 1939 and settled in Rotterdam. When she had to leave as a foreign refugee, she moved to Gouda.
From the end of February 1941, Henni first lived for six months at Graaf Florisweg 8. Subsequently, on September 1 that year, she moved diagonally across the street to Graaf Florisweg 15. The widow Polet-van der Linden had a postal agency here from the end of September 1940 and telegraph office in two old houses near the tunnel. An old map from 1925 that Coretta Bakker-Wijbrans of SAMH conjured up shows how the Graaf Florisweg at the time continued to the Spoorstraat. Albert Plesmanplein is now located on this spot.
Jan Lafeber sent a newspaper report, detailing all the actions that were still sent by post at the time. A relic from the pre-internet era, when the post still played a pivotal role in society. He also unearthed a photo showing the row of old houses, of which numbers 15 and 17 on the Graaf Florisweg were part.
Henni worked as a housekeeper in the Central Home, but perhaps she helped the widow Polet secretly for some extra money in the auxiliary post office. For a long time she was barred by her position in the retirement home, while more and more Jewish fellow citizens were deported. After all, she too had to believe it.
On April 21, 1943, she had to report to Vught with several dozen of the last remaining Jewish fellow citizens. A police report from officer and Jew hunter Arie Oudenaarden bears witness to this. On May 23, Henni had to go from this camp to Westerbork, and two days later her deportation to Sobibor followed. There she died immediately upon arrival on May 28, 1943.
One Stolperstein on the corner of Graaf Florisweg and Albert Plesmanplein now reminds us of Henni Freudenstein.
