Esther Knoop was born on November 18, 1882 in Amsterdam as the second child of Salomon Knoop and Ribca Lopes Cardozo. She comes from a family with 8 children. She spends her childhood in Amsterdam and there she also follows training as a hat maker. In 1917 Esther Knoop moved to Hengelo, she is single and goes to work as a fashionist and shop lady in the store of Berg on the Marktplein, nowadays Burgemeester Jansenplein, next to café-restaurant “National”.
In 1923 Esther took over the business of Berg. Things are going well and in 1925 she moved to Langestraat 5 to expand her case there. She goes to live above the store herself. At that time she employed various studio workers, including Alida Gerritdina Krijte-Holtuis with whom she becomes friends.
"Maison Knoop" was a first -class case according to the daughter of Alida Krijkeholthuis, Meta Krijke. Esther Knoop sold in addition to self -designed and self -made hats but also matching accessories, such as scarves and bead chains.
If Esther is forced by the Germans after the outbreak of the Second World War to hand over her business to a so -called Verwalter and therefore can no longer continue to live above the case, the Kraire family offers her to come and live in their house. They live at Vondelstraat number 3. There she rents a room at the front of the house. In December 1942, warned about raids, she leaves for her sister Rachel in Huizen (NH) to go under. With her sister, now widowed, and his stepson they dive under, first in Huizen and then in Laren with acquaintances who run a guest house. They are betrayed there.
Together with a number of other people in hiding, they are arrested and transferred to the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam. From there they are put on transport to the Westerbork transit camp in Drenthe. On October 9, 1943, she and her sister Rachel arrived there and they are locked up in the penalty barrack 67. This was intended for Jews who had been in hiding and were arrested. Ten days later, on October 19, Esther Knoop and her sister Rachel are put on transport and immediately gassed on October 22, 1943 on arrival in Auschwitz. Esther Knoop was 60 years old. Her sister Rachel 58 years.
