Scholestraat 15 Steenwijk
The butcher shop of Izaäk Slager was located in Scholestraat. Isaac was born in Steenwijk in 1863. He came from a butcher's family that had lived in Steenwijk for generations. His mother was from Lemmer. Izaak grew up in a family with nine children. His brother Jacob Slager later lived on the Rozenstraat. Isaac married Sara de Jong who came from Lemmer, just like his mother. They had three children: Philip, Levie and Simon. Philip and Levie left Steenwijk. Philip married and went to live in Winterswijk where he started a butcher shop and Levie married and went to live in Apeldoorn. Philip died in 1932. Isaac worked with his father in the butcher shop and was an active member of the Jewish community. He was on the board. Later he took over the butcher's shop from his father. Birth of daughter Sara, Scholestraat 15, 1931, mention in the Nieuw Israelietisch Weekblad Birth of daughter Sara, Scholestraat 15, 1931, mention in the Nieuw Israelietisch Weekblad In 1930 Simon married Nettie de Levie, a butcher's daughter from Veendam. Together they went to live in the butcher shop in Scholestraat. They had three daughters: Sara (Sonja), Theresia (Trees) and Davidina (Dineke). Simon had to work in Camp Conrad at the end of July 1942, but he escaped from this labor camp. His daughters were already housed at three different addresses in the north of the country. Simon left with Nettie for Amsterdam and from there to The Hague. Isaac also came to The Hague, but he returned to Steenwijk in March 1943. He was one of the thirteen Jewish Steenwijkers who were taken from their homes on April 8, 1943. He stayed in Kamp Vugt for almost a year and a half, but in August 1944 he was taken to Westerbork and then by train to Auschwitz where he, aged 81, was taken directly to the gas chamber. Simon and Nettie were discovered by the SD at their hiding place. They arrived in Vught, like Simons' father, via the Scheveningen prison. Simon went on a transport to Westerbork with him. Nettie arrived here a few days later. The three of them were in one of the last transports to Auschwitz. Simon and Nettie were still able to work and those who could work survived. Simon was sent to the Vaihingen labor camp near Strasbourg. In January 1945 he died there at the age of 46. His son Philip and his entire family did not survive the camps Nettie, who stood on the doorstep of the Auschwitz gas chamber, was able to escape from the dressing room. She ended up in a camp in Silesia that was liberated by the Russians on May 6, 1945. In June 1943 she returned to Steenwijk. She was reunited with her three daughters and three weeks later Nettie had reopened the butcher shop in Scholestraat. Not only for Isaac and Simon were placed Stolpersteine on Scholestraat, but there is also a stone for Nettie, who survived the Shoah. On her stone it says: "deported Auschwitz liberated".
