Retiefstraat 52b
Amsterdam
Isaäc Beugeltas (1897) is the eldest son of Levie Beugeltas and Margaretha Rine. In 1915, partly to escape poverty in the impoverished Jewish neighborhood and undoubtedly also as an adventure, he committed himself to the KNIL for six years as a soldier in the overseas armed forces for a premium of NLG 400. When his mother dies in June 1916, he cannot return. Only in 1922, when he renews his contract for a second term as artillery brigadier, is he entitled to leave and will have visited her grave in Diemen.
During his leave, Isaäc married Marianne Swaab (1897) on 15 November 1922 in Amsterdam and a month later they returned to Tjimahi together. A final contract renewal followed in 1928, this time as a watchman of the artillery. In 1934 their son Maurits Beugeltas was born in Bandung and in 1935 Isaäc in Tjimahi was awarded an honorable discharge, entitling him to an annual pension of NLG 1,134 (indexed to now: approximately EUR 27,000).
In Amsterdam the family moves into a house in Retiefstraat, first at no. 59-I and later, in 1939 at 52-II. There, in July 1942, they received a call for labor expansion. They arrive in Westerbork on 29 July via the Hollandsche Schouwburg, where they are transported to Auschwitz on 31 July. On arrival on August 2, Marianne and Maurits are immediately murdered. Due to the lack of his data in the records, the latest date of death for Isaäc is September 30, 1942.
