Velperweg 79
Arnhem
Eleonore de Ruuk, descendant and applicant for the stones, investigated the family. She told us the following:
'The people for whom we had the stones laid are my great-grandmother Sibilla Israel-Bachrach, her son Solomon and daughters Mina, Saartje and Geertruida. My grandmother, Anna de Ruuk-Israel, the middle of the family's 9 children, survived the war. She, my grandfather and my father lived in the Dutch East Indies and were imprisoned there during the war. My grandfather died in a camp in Japan. https://fukuoka14b.org/frederik-de-ruuk/
It is true that the last residential address of the Israel family was 18 Willem van Gulikstraat. But given certain circumstances, we found their previous home address more appropriate.
At the beginning of 1939 they still lived at Prümelaan nr.1, then half of the building of what is now Velperweg 79. At the end of April 1939 they moved to W.v.Gulikstraat 18. At the end of May 1939 my great-grandfather Bernard Israël passed away.
Because of the outbreak of the war they did not live here for long. During the war, the relatives partly went into hiding, participated in the resistance, fled and were imprisoned in various places. Most of the photos that have survived of Arnhem were taken at this house on Prümelaan 1.
Saartje was indeed married to Joseph Nathans and went to live elsewhere in Arnhem with her husband and son. Except for Saartje, they survived the war. Because the whole family has lived together at Prümelaan 1, this place is more suitable in our opinion. Otherwise Saartje would also be separated as she would not be on the W.v. Gulikstraat lived. We didn't think this was a good idea. We came to this decision in consultation with the other close family.
The children who survived the war were: Raphaël Israël, Anna de Ruuk-Israel, Helena Nathans-Israel, Marcus Israël and Nathan Israël.
The family owned several antiquarian bookshops and bookshops under the name B.M. Israel. In Arnhem, Nijmegen and Amsterdam. After the war, the sons who had survived the war continued the business. However, each went his own way.
