Crabethstraat 36
Gouda
Alfred Landau (63) and Henriëtte Landau-Nehemias (67) lived here for over a year.
Henriette was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1875, Alfred in Hamburg in 1878. Alfred's father Leopold was a beautiful lyrical tenor who died young. Alfred was thirteen at the time, he was studying trade. In 1908 he married Henriëtte Nehemias, she played the piano well and spoke French. Daughter Marianne announced herself in May 1909.
From 1931, Alfred worked as a sales representative for the Ralli Brothers, an international London-based company. He specialized in the hide trade. Finally there was now some more bread on the shelf. Daughter Marinanne went to live on her own in 1932 and worked as a shorthand typist.
In 1938 Alfred had to make way for a non-Jew. After a brief journey through London, the couple took refuge in the Netherlands. Arthur set up his own agency in hides in Rotterdam. At the beginning of 1939 daughter Marianne also came to Rotterdam.
In February 1941 Henriëtte and Alfred were forced to move to Gouda. From the beginning of September 1941 they lived on the top floor of Crabethstraat 36. They lived here for a year, isolated and well. They were no longer allowed to enter the nearby park, wearing the Star of David became mandatory, they were no longer allowed to associate with non-Jews. In mid-July 1942, the forced Jewish transports started running from Westerbork.
Two months earlier in May, Alfred and Henriette had to endure their 33-year-old daughter being imprisoned. They will have heard little or nothing from her again. On 1 May, Marianne was arrested from her home address 39b 's Gravendijkwal in Rotterdam and detained for three months in the Haagseveer police station. From here she was transferred to Westerbork, her deportation to Auschwitz followed in early August. She was murdered there on September 30, 1942.
Two months after their daughter Marianne, Alfred and Henriëtte followed the same fateful road to Auschwitz. On October 13, 1942, they were arrested by the Gouda police with the help of the Rotterdam Jew hunters "group 10". They were transported to Amsterdam by the police in a group of 27 people. They were detained in the Hollandsche Schouwburg for more than a week, on October 22, 1942 they had to go to Westerbork. Immediately the next day they were deported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered on October 26, 1942.
Two Stolpersteine in front of this address now recall Alfred Landau and Henriëtte Landau-Nehemias.
