Klaas Alberts was born in 1921 at Oosterstraat 67 in Groningen. He comes from a Reformed family of seven children. Klaas goes to the teacher training college with the bible in the H. W. Mesdagstraat. The director, Anko Scholtens, is fiercely anti-German.
When he is 21 he becomes a teacher in Vries. Klaas informs the head of the school, Simon Schoon, that he wants to join the resistance. That doesn't happen right away. When Klaas becomes a teacher in Koekange, he visits Simon again with the request to enlist him for the resistance.
When Simon Schoon founded the KP (knock squad North Drenthe) in early 1944, Klaas became the first KP'er. His pseudonym is "Had". More young men join the resistance and they are initially given light assignments to learn the "trade", such as "organizing" a good bicycle from an NSB member.
Soon Klaas is called in at the LO work (National Organization for help to people in hiding). For example, Had becomes involved in robberies in Assen, Coevorden and Grootegast.
Things go wrong in September 1944 during a raid on a collaborator in Haren. A shooting ensues, in which Had is seriously injured. He is eventually transferred to the university hospital in Groningen. There, Had is liberated after a few days by the KP Groningen. He is recovering from his injuries at Pop Dijkema (Oosterhoogebrug). Had wants to get back to his KP friends as soon as possible.
On November 8, 1944, things go completely wrong. Had cycled with his friend Frans Dijkstra to the farm of the Nijmeyer family in Anreep, where their friends are located. However, they do not know that a major robbery had taken place shortly before. They are arrested and taken to the police station, where Frans Dijkstra manages to escape. Had goes to the detention center in Assen.
The liberation of the prison in Assen on December 11, 1944 comes too late for Had. He is then in the Scholtenshuis, where he is severely mistreated.
January 18, 1945 Klaas Alberts arrives by train in Neuengamme. His farewell letter states, among other things: “For me there is no more hope for man. I have 10 death sentences. We don't like to talk about heroes, we don't even know what heroes are.
