Scheepersstraat 1 rood
Haarlem
Betsy Hilversum was the third daughter of Ester Hilversum. Two years after Betsy, her brother Salomon was born. Her parents were born then Betsy was not married, which is why she and her sisters and brother were named Hilversum. After Ester was married to Manuel van Gelderen, the father of these children, they had eight children who were called Van Gelderen.
The parents and their children lived in the Korte Begijnestraat in the center of Haarlem. In January 1942, son Salomon Hilversum, 21 years old, left the Korte Begijnestraat with his very young pregnant wife to Scheepersstraat 1 RD. Their son Peter was born there in the summer. In the meantime, Betsy was also expecting. But she was abandoned by the father of her child, Simon Zwaan, and moved in with her brother at Scheepersstraat 1rd. On November 13, 1942, her daughter Ester Heintje Elisabeth was born there. Betsy and her daughter were also registered in The Hague, resident at the address Schedeldoekshaven 66. It is unknown from when and how long she stayed there.
In mid -February 1943 all Jewish Haarlemmers received the message that they had to leave. Salomon then lived with his family in Scheepersstraat. Whether Betsy and her daughter then also lived there is unclear. We do know that Betsy was picked up with her 5 -month -old baby and her brother Salomon during a family visit in Amsterdam. According to the family stories, she was probably looking for her child's father. Salomon managed to escape from the Hollandsche Schouwburg where he had been taken and officially left Haarlem for Amsterdam at the end of May and went into hiding.
Betsy was transported to Westerbork shortly after she was arrested.
