Weert 47
Meerssen
Frans Henderson works as a manager / factory supervisor at the paper mill. His house is opposite the factory in a house he rented from Tielens, the owner of the factory. Together with his wife Maria Geertsen - who died in 1939 - he has three children. He is fiercely anti-German and makes no attempt to hide his aversion to the occupier. According to the War Graves Foundation, he is a member of the resistance.
Francis is betrayed by a colleague. As a result of that betrayal, the Maastricht police searched Henderson's house. He is arrested together with his brother Johan, who also lives in Weert, but his brother is released again. The police found anti-German literature in his house, including an illegal sheet in the pocket of an old coat and 27 gold ten euros. Henderson is then taken to Camp Amersfoort.
He becomes seriously ill in Amersfoort, but can undergo surgery. For this Henderson must be brought to Vught. That happens on November 19, 1943. Henderson dies during the operation in Vught. Also present is chaplain Kooyman from Rotterdam, who still administers the H. Oliesel. Henderson's pedigree card says: 'combustion message available'. He may have been cremated.
After his return from Dachau after the war, Chaplain Kooyman sent some letters to WJMF Henderson, the youngest daughter of Frans Henderson. He had promised that to the dying Henderson in Vugt. They are dated November 2 and 8, 1945. He writes, among other things: "I can assure you that he died full of surrender to the will of God and is certainly already celebrating in heaven."
Frans Henderson was buried in the cemetery in Rothem, municipality of Meerssen.
