Cornelis was born on October 28, 1889 in 's-Hertogenbosch as the second of three children of Antonius Chamboné and Maria van der Sluijs. He married Maria van Pelt in Nijmegen in 1915, with whom he had three children. However, Maria died in childbirth in 1919 at the age of 35, giving birth to their youngest daughter. Before the end of the year, Cornelis marries Antonetta Lamers with whom he has two more sons.
Cornelis lived in Nijmegen during these years and was then a corporal with the colonial reserve, but it is not known whether he also had tropical service. With his second wife he moves to Oss in 1920, later to settle in Utrecht.
After the outbreak of the war, Cornelis worked there as an office clerk and was active in the underground. It is not known about his exact resistance work, but his work with the municipality probably gave him the opportunity to arrange distribution documents or forged identity cards for Jews and people in hiding. At some point he falls through the cracks and is taken to the camps.
Eventually Cornelis ends up in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. With the continued advance of the Allies, the Germans increasingly use this camp as a 'dumping ground' for mostly sick and seriously weakened prisoners who are transported here from the evacuated concentration camps, or who have been put on death marches. Conditions in the camp are deplorably bad. The prisoners are exposed to exhaustion and severe abuse, but it is mainly the deliberate neglect that makes victims here. The prisoners are left to their own devices; food and medicines are deliberately withheld and the barracks are extremely filthy, allowing infectious diseases to spread quickly. In the spring of 1945, as a result of these circumstances, a typhus epidemic broke out in the camp, claiming tens of thousands of victims.
Bergen-Belsen was liberated by the British on 15 April 1945, but in the following months 14,000 more prisoners died as a result of typhoid fever, malnutrition and dehydration. Among them is Cornelis, for whom 31 May 1945 is stated as the date of death. Cornelis thus turned 55 years old.
