Curt Hirschberg was a cinema operator by profession. Between 1918 and the mid-1930s, he and his twin brother operated a number of cinemas, variety theaters and a concert hall in their hometown of Breslau. When the Nazi regime emerged, Curt and his brother fled to the Netherlands. Within a few years they managed to build a new company. Their company 'Gebroeders Hirschberg Hollandsche Bioscoopexploitation' included cinema theaters in The Hague, Heerlen, Hoensbroek and Helmond. With the outbreak of World War II, Curt and his brother lost their movie theaters again. Curt died in camp Blechhammer in 1943. His brother survived the war.
Curt (Bas) Hirschberg is mentioned in the diary that Ernst Ruschkewitz kept during his stay in various concentration camps. The diary is kept in the archives of the Jewish community in Würzburg. Extracts from the diary can be read (in Dutch) on the website World War II experiences of the Ruschkewitz family.
The twin brothers Curt Hirschberg (also Kurt) and Erwin were born on August 16, 1900 in what was then German Breslau. While Erwin survives the war, Curt is shot in the back on August 23, 1943 in Blechhammer (Auschwitz) and dies. The brothers have had cinemas, a variety theater and a concert hall in Breslau since 1928. Fleeing from the Nazis, they come to the Netherlands, where they operate Hollandia cinemas in Heerlen, Hoensbroek, Helmond and The Hague. They live in Broekhem ... Whether Erwin is also deported is unclear.
