When their grandmother was murdered during Kristallnacht, she and her older brother Hermann tried to escape from Germany. . Because her sister Rosa already worked as a housekeeper in Enschede for the Heymans family at Waldeckstraat 4, she ensured that Hermann, Jenny with her family, and Lotte could come to the Netherlands. Her sister Paula, who was married, left for Belgium with her husband and daughter and was taken with her husband to Auschwitz by transport from Mechelen.
