Julius Sternfeld (*1896 Renkum) was a son of Isaak Sternfeld and Johanna Cohen. His ancestors came from Brummen. Julius' father had a butcher's shop in Renkum but moved to Bocholt in 1902 where he had a flourishing grain trade.
At the first expressions of anti-Semitism, many Jews fled to the Netherlands. On May 31, 1933, the following Jews who had emigrated from Germany lived in Aalten: Isaak Sternfeld, his wife Johanna Cohen, their children Julius Salomon and Dina, all from Bocholt, wrote the Aalten municipal police.
Julius corresponded with Sophie Hes (*1900) from Aschendorf. Her father owned a butcher's shop which she continued with her sister in 1930 and had to give up in 1939. Sophie went to Julius, they got married and lived in Westendorp. Julius was a wood manufacturer. With a partner he wanted to make sculptures for furniture from artificial horn, precious resin and fine metal. But the war intervened.
On December 10, 1942, Julius left with Sophie VOW, Departed Unknown Where, in other words they went into hiding. They lived in a chicken coop in Harreveld for two years. The farmer gave them the warm meal. But then they got caught. They were taken with our own horse and wagon and 'eingesperrt' in Varsseveld, the farmer's son said. The Red Cross reported: Arrested on September 27/28, 1944. [..] Since then every trace has been missing. Possibly taken to a prison in Germany. September 30, 1944 was noted as their date of death.
