Assiesstraat 124
Zwolle
With these stumbling blocks we commemorate Jakob Podchlebnik, born in Dobra (Russia) on May 26, 1862 and his wife Kreindel Kos, born in Babyn (Austria-Hungary) on September 10, 1868. They were married in Cologne in 1923. Jacob was 80, Kreindel 74 years old when they were murdered in the gas chambers of Sobibor extermination camp on May 14, 1943. **
We don't know much about this elderly couple. In October 1939 they came to Rotterdam from Düsseldorf, probably to join Jacob's family. In early September 1940, they were hit by one of the occupier's first anti-Jewish measures. Foreign Jews were ordered by circular to leave bombed-out Rotterdam. They had three days to leave. In their haste they could only take the most necessary.
In October 1940, Jakob and Kreindel came to live in Zwolle, first in Hagelstraat at no. 15 and from February 1941 at Assiesplein 23. The former buildings were replaced by new buildings here. The former Assiesplein 23 stood at the current Assiesstraat 124.
On 8 May 1942 an advertisement of the children and grandchildren appeared in the Joodsche Weekblad congratulating Jacob on his 80th birthday. That makes it plausible that he was married before his marriage to Kreindel
On April 6, 1943, it was announced that all remaining Jews, with the exception of mixed marriages and the so-called half- and quarter-Jews, had to leave Overijssel and Gelderland by April 10 at the latest. Overijssel had to become "Judenrein". On April 8 and 9, 79 Jewish people from Zwolle were deported. Jacob and Kreindel arrived on April 9 in the concentration camp Vught, where they stayed for a month. On May 9, 1943 they arrived in the transit camp Westerbork. Two days later their last journey began which would take them to Sobibor with 1,444 fellow sufferers. Sobibor in occupied Poland, the country of which both were nationals until they were made stateless in 1941.
