Johan Keplerstraat 3
Amsterdam
Levie Hirschel, born on August 24, 1895 in Amsterdam, was a religious teacher, curator of the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana and assistant rabbi of the Dutch Israelite main synagogue (NIHS). On April 15, 1931, he married Louise Dervisz, and together they had four children. Levie's parents, Saul and Schoonje, died respectively in 1922 and 1931, and after the death of his mother he moved to Johan Keplerstraat 3, where he went to live with Louise and their children.
During the Second World War, Levie was temporarily exempt from deportation because of his position, which also applied to his wife and children. Despite attempts to obtain Palestine certificates and an "Ausnahme Schaininigung" (statement statement), the family was arrested during a raid on September 29, 1943 and taken to Westerbork.
On November 16, 1943, Levie, Louise and their children were deported to Auschwitz. Louise and the children were immediately murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau on November 19, 1943. Levie survived for a few weeks, possibly he worked in the coal mines of Janina or Fürstengrube, but he was supposed to have died in or near Auschwitz/Birkenau or in the mining area between December 7, 1943 and March 31, 1944.
After the war, investigations led by the Red Cross and Dutch authorities to the issue of death certificates, which stated that Louise and the children had died in or near Auschwitz on November 19, 1943. A death certificate was drawn up for Levie stating that he had died in Poland on March 31, 1944.
