The history of the Jewish family of Israel is tragic. Marcus (Max) Israëls is director of Maxis (MAX lSraëls), a corset company and has a shop for women's underwear in Arent Krijtsstraat. On a cold September evening in 1942, 14-year-old Cocky Kolumbis, who lives at number 51 in Schoolstraat, hears a terrible noise in the street. Cocky: "I heard screams and dramatic crying. It was the mother of my 7-year-old girl next door Astrid, who was raging wildly; I saw her husband Marcus, daughter Astrid and herself violently resisted and being taken away by Germans." The chances are very high that the lsraëls family was betrayed by NSB members who lived nearby, such as in the Schoolstraat itself and in the Raadhuisstraat. Almost immediately after they were arrested, on September 9, 1942, Marcus, Maria and little Astrid are transported to Westerbork.
Two days later they are deported to Auschwitz where they are gassed September 14, 1942. In a week they were murdered from the safe place Diemen, 1200 kilometers away in Poland. Son Freddy, who was not at home during the raid, manages to flee abroad and survives the war. No one was arrested after the war in Diemen for treason of the Israeli family.
