Blankenbrugerstraat 5 Haaksbergen
Salomon Jonas Heiman Frankenhuis was married to his cousin Johanna Falkenstein. The couple had five children, two sons, Jonas and Jacob and three daughters, Julia, Henriëtte (nickname Jetje) and Betsie. The family lived in Haaksbergen, where Salomon ran a butcher shop in Blankenburgerstraat with his brother Jacob Frankenhuis. In 1927 the house was converted into a (butcher's) shop-house. The family lived at the same address. Their brother Jacob Frankenhuis and the mother of Salomon and Jacob, Jette Frankenhuis-Falkenstein, lived with them. Under the German occupation, Salomon Jonas Heiman Frankenhuis was employed in camp Overbroek near Kesteren, one of the Jewish labor camps. On October 2, 1942 he was taken to Westerbork. At the same time, his family was taken from home with two taxis and transported to the station in Enschede. From there they were transported to Westerbork the next day. At the beginning of the occupation, the children Betsie and Jacob attended the Public Primary School, the village school, in Haaksbergen. From October 8, 1941 they had to go to a separate Jewish school in Enschede. This was located in the building of the former Western School in the G.J. van Heekstraat. Jacob went to the Jewish U.L.O. After the war, a statue was placed for the children at the entrance of the village school in Haaksbergen with the following text on a plaque: 'As an autumn leaf, you have been snatched away, vulnerable, defenseless and left to the storm of destruction. The spring bloom has passed you by. '
