Stationsstraat 24 Aalten
Abraham van Gelder was born in Aalten on November 9, 1878, the youngest son of cattle dealer Aron David van Gelder (1829-1913) and Julchen Lipper (1832-1907) from Iserlohn. Abraham became a butcher; at least his shop was located in Landstraat from 1920 onwards. Together with his brother Levie, who had a butcher shop on Dijkstraat, he supplied the kosher meat for the Jewish population of Aalten. Abraham married Reintjen de Jong, born on October 22, 1881 in Apeldoorn. They had five children, two of whom (Simon and Maurits) emigrated and two (Eveline and Julchen) moved to Arnhem. The oldest son, Arnold Abraham, born on July 20, 1908, opened a store in Bredevoortsestraat in 1937. When the Jewish shops had to be closed during the occupation, Abraham and Reintjen moved to Stationsstraat 24. From there they left for a hiding place in Oosterkerkstraat. On August 22, 1944, they were arrested by treason and brought to Auschwitz on September 3, 1944 with the last deportation train that left the Netherlands on September 3, 1944, where they were murdered on September 6, 1944, aged 65 and 62, respectively. We know from Julchen that she worked in the Former Rotterdam Children's Home at Amsterdamseweg 1 in Arnhem. She was murdered on July 16, 1943 in Sobibor, aged 29. The other children of Abraham and Reintjen survived the war.
