Karel Emil van Zwanenburg († 1943), son of Salomon van Zwanenburg and Estella Jacobs (died 1917), grew up in a Jewish family with brother Albert Lodewijk and sister Therese. He married Rosalie Frank in 1912 (daughter of Juda Frank and Sophia Herzdahl); The childless couple lived successively in Rotterdam (Claes de Vrieselaan), Amsterdam (Zeilstraat, 1914) and Pieter LastMankade (1928). In 1943 they were taken from their home and deported to Westerbork on 15 April (Barak 60). Karel tried to prevent deportation via the so-called Barneveld list, intended to save "useful" Jews. Via contacts such as S.H. He asked the Marez Oyens and Abraham Asscher (Jewish Council) for intervention with the German authorities. On April 16, 1943, De Marez reported that the application was at the department, but on April 22 it became clear that without official confirmation could "nothing to be reached". On April 27, 1943, Karel and Rosalie were put on transport to Sobibor, where they were murdered immediately after arrival (April 30). Their story illustrates the unsuccessful attempts of Jews to escape from the Holocaust through bureaucratic channels, and the merciless efficiency of the Nazi reproduction machine. None of Charles's direct family members (parents, brother, sister) survived the war, which underlines the systematic extermination of Jewish families. (199 words)
