Bosbeekweg Bennekom
In the walk, Emanuël Alexander was called “Maantje”. He was born on November 21, 1882. He married Fanny Hartoghson from Embden (Germany). She was born there on August 14, 1885. The couple lived at 105 Dorpsstraat in Renkum. In addition to a drugstore, Maantje owned a bookstore and reading library in the Dorpsstraat. He was also a publisher of the Renkumse Courant, which was published every Saturday. This Manasseh was a very active man, who held various board positions in the tourist office, the Oranjevereniging, the IJsclub Vooruit and the Middenstandsvereniging. Especially as a board member of the Orange Association he gave himself 100 percent. He was co-organizer of many Orange festivities for years on end. He was also an avid chess player. He was also a member of the Jewish community of Wageningen. He held the board position of vice-chairman. Wes Beekhuizen writes about Fanny, Maantje's wife in his book "Green was my village" that she always had a lot of trouble with our language. Nevertheless, she helped a lot in both stores and got on well with the villagers. Two sons were born from their marriage: Eugène († November 6, 1982) and Harry (Herman), who has lived in Paris since 1945. In October 1942 the Manasseh family disappeared from Renkum. The Manasse-Hertogsohn couple went into hiding in the De Bosbeek in Bennekom. At the end of March 1943 they were arrested at the hiding place and transferred on April 2, 1943 to camp Westerbork, where they stayed in barrack 62. On April 6, 1943, they were deported to Sobibor, where they were murdered on April 9, 1943. https://www.oudbennekom.nl/bosbeekweg-manasse/
