Leopold Menist was born in Dinxperlo on June 15, 1904 as the second son of Isaac Menist and Carolina Schweiger. He worked as an administrator at the Deventer Tapijtfabriek Maurits Prins in Dinxperlo. Leopold married Sophia Hamburger, born in Nijkerk on December 1, 1903. Together with Sophia, he had two children, Isaac (March 14, 1932) and Jetty (December 13, 1933) Sophia was the daughter of Isaac Hamburger and Jet van Bingen. Besides a brother Benedict, she also had a sister Petronella Sippora. Petronella was the only one of the Hamburger family to survive the Holocaust. Together with her husband Benedictus van Baren and her daughters Jetty and Betty Marion, she survived the Holocaust. Isaac and Jetty were together with their parents in Vught until June 7th. Together with their mother they left with the children's transport on 8 June 1943 via Westerbork to Sobibor where they were immediately murdered on arrival on 11 June 1943. The number of people during that 'child transport' was 3,017. Nobody survived this transport. Leopold stayed in Vught and had to work for the Esco (Escotex, ready-to-wear and fur). On November 15, 1943 he left with a direct transport to Auschwitz; arrival November 18, 1943. The number of people during the transport was 1149. On January 31, 1944, Leopold Menist was murdered in Auschwitz.
