Grotestraat 5 Almelo
Joseph Berg was the son of Levi Berg and Elisabeth Bos. He was a traveling salesman and, like his wife, was also born in Stad Almelo. Presumably in late 1941 or early 1942, he married Jeannette Mietje Simon, a daughter of David Simon and Nettchen Kahn. However, Joseph and his wife were already sent to Camp Westerbork on November 18, 1942 and deported to Auschwitz on November 24 after six days. His wife Jeannette Mietje (then three months pregnant) was murdered there immediately upon arrival on November 27, 1942, but Joseph himself died on March 31, 1944, somewhere in Central Europe. This suggests that Joseph Berg was forced to perform hard labor and endured many hardships before he was finally killed. Although deported Jews have had to perform hard labor for the Nazis in numerous places, such as in Auschwitz III, it is not impossible that Joseph Berg belonged to the so-called Cosel group. The transport with which Joseph was deported to Auschwitz on November 24, 1942 fell exactly in the period known as the Cosel period, about which the following is known. The period from August 28 to December 12, 1942 was called the Cosel period, so called because a number of transports with deported Jews, also from Belgium and France, at Cosel station, 80 kilometers west of Auschwitz, according to the Germans for labor suitable men were unloaded to work in the surrounding camps. Those who were not removed from the train here were forwarded to Auschwitz. At that time, about 9000 men were taken from 39 trains to Auschwitz by the Germans. They came from France and Belgium, and 3500 of them came with 18 trains from Westerbork. Of the 9,000 men who were taken off the trains in Cosel, only between 700 and 900 survived the war; of the 3,500 Dutch 181, of which 126 from Blechhammer camp. Cosel's freight station, the site of the selections, did not change significantly after 1942. On September 2, 2016, a monument was unveiled by the relatives of the victims.
